CAST BREAKDOWNS:

THE PRODUCERS

MAX BIALYSTOCK: a portly man in his fifties with the manner and sensibility of a Borscht-Belt comedian. The original movie Max, Zero Mostel, is the personification of the character. Cunning, excitable, brash, sarcastic, loud, bossy --- after all, he is a producer.

LOW A - HIGH F# Standard theater-style dancing

LEO BLOOM: a meek-mannered accountant in his mid-thirties who still carries around a piece of his childhood blue blanket for security as he is afraid of his own shadow. 'nuff said.

LOW Bb - HIGH F# Standard theater-style dancing, plus a little "tap"

FRANZ LIEBKIND: a wild-eyes German immigrant in lederhosen and a German army helmet. Probably in his mid-40's and he probably served in World War II, on the wrong side.

LOW F - HIGH F Standard theater-style dancing

ROGER DeBRIS: the worst director on Broadway in 1959. Aged: 40's to 50's (or even older) with the outrageous and grandiose gestures, walk, demeanor and vocal qualities of a second-rate flamboyant caricature of a Greenwich Village theater type. Phew.

LOW B - HIGH G Standard theater-style dancing, tap dancing would be a "plus"

CARMEN GHIA: a thin, strange looking man, probably in his 30's or 40's, who runs Roger's household, and acts as his personal secretary. An outrageous character.

LOW B - HIGH C (can possibly be done in falsetto) Standard theater-style dancing

ULLA INGA HANSEN BENSON YONSEN TALLEN-HALLEN SVADEN-SVANSON: a drop dead gorgeous, young Swedish blonde, with the Swedish accent to match. Wha, wha, wha, wha, wha!

LOW Bb - HIGH F# (Ulla must also be able to belt a HIGH D) Standard theater-style dancing

A wonderful and quite active singing/dancing ENSEMBLE of men and women, of all ethnicities, all triple threats, which play the following roles:

Bag Lady, bum, nuns, street cleaner, usherettes, Judge and Jury Foreman, prisoners, first nighters, little old ladies who dance with walkers, accountants, chorus girls, Roger's team of lighting, set, costume designers and choreographer, Stalin, Churchill, storm troopers and cops.

Ideally the members of the ensemble can all tap dance, especially the women, otherwise standard theater-style dancing

SMOKEY JOE'S CAFE

Seeking a dynamic, versatile and charismatic cast of 9 triple-threat performers.
All must have excellent pop/rock/R&B voices.

Seeking all roles—

Adrian: Male; African-American. The slow one with a naive nature. Should have excellent comic timing. Tap dance is a plus. Must have G to A-flat on top.

BJ: Female; African-American . A woman of size, arrogance and great humor. This character was inspired by the titanic rhythm and blues shouter Big Mama Thorton, who recorded the original version of "Hound Dog". Seeking a strong gospel belt singer in the style of Patti LaBelle or Aretha Franklin. Must belt to high G-flat.

Brenda: Female; Any Ethnicity. A combination of savvy, wit, brains and beauty that is born of the line of stunning rock and roll divas which included Ruth Brown, La Vern Baker, and Tina Turner .  She must have great timing and an alluring quality. Must be an excellent dancer and be able to belt to C.

Deelee: Female; Caucasian. Evokes both the innocence of the teenage girls who fell in love with Elvis, and the wild streak that all of us dreamed about such girls having.  She is Brenda Lee, but sometimes wants to be Jayne Mansfield. Must be an excellent dancer and be able to belt to C.

Fred: Male; African-American. The implacable bass, who's seen it all and refuses to get upset about it. Must have low C.

Patti:  Female; Any Ethnicity. The throaty voice of experience; a little older-but-wiser, she anchors the more serious moments, and may even seem to come from a slightly later period than the rest of the company. She is a mixture of Janis Joplin, Bonnie Raitt, and Bette Midler; Must belt to high G-flat.

Ken: Male; African-American. The smoothie and crooner. Must be an excellent dancer. Tap Dance a Plus.  F sharp to G top and must have a low G.

Michael: Male; Caucasian. Evokes the memory of Elvis and Dion (of Dion and the Belmonts) without doing an Elvis impression or camping his way through a GREASE - inspired parody. Tap dance a plus. Must have low C.

Victor: Male; African-American. The preening bad-boy. Must have an excellent comic sense and a child-like charm. Tap dance is a plus. B-flat top, and falsetto to a high G.
